World Book Day 2009 in the UK and Ireland will take place on Thursday 5th March.
The aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading and to aid this children are given the opportunity to have a book of their own.
Thanks to the generosity of National Book Tokens Ltd and numerous participating booksellers, school children are entitled to receive a World Book Day £1 Book Token. These are distributed through schools and can be spent in participating bookshops.
Each year a number of special £1 books are published espcially for children to exchange their vouchers for. For 2009 6 books have been published. One is a picture book and the other five are 'flip books', two-in-one books with twice as many exciting stories to enjoy! Each is aimed at a different age group.
Another important feature of World Book day is the publication of Quick Reads. Quick Reads are fast-paced, bite-sized books by bestselling writers and celebrities especially written for adults who find books difficult or unengaging, or for avid readers, simply wanting a short, fast read. They are priced at just £1.99 and 10 new books have been published this year.
Many schools allow their pupils to come to school dressed as characters from books as part of their celebrations of World Book Day. A selection of literary costumes can be found at Jokers Masquerade, and to find out more about World Book Day visit the website at www.worldbookday.com
