The aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing every primary age child with the opportunity to have a book of their own. Children will be given a £1 book token, via their school, which they can exchange for one of the World Book Day £1 vouchers at participating bookshops
All major supermarkets in the UK – Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and most large bookshop chains – WH Smith, Waterstones, Eason etc and hundreds of independent booksellers are participating, as are a number of school book clubs – Scholastic and Usborne Books At Home.

World Book Day was created to encourage children all around the world to get reading. The campaign has expanded it's reach in recent years from it's focus on younger children to include young adults and adults who struggle with literacy issues.
