2023's Most Exciting New Kids Movies

Despite the continuing popularity of streaming services in the UK, there is nothing quite like a trip to the cinema to see a new movies. The huge screen, the atmosphere and the shared experience of watching a film for the first time is just not the same as watching at home.

There may be lots of scare stories around about the demise of cinema, but there are still enough movie fans around who want that proper experience of seeing a film the way the director intended it!

So here is our round up of what's on at the cinema for kids in the 2023, as we look ahead to the most hotly anticipated family movies next year.

This is the current movies scheduled for release, so please be aware that in the movie industry, release dates move all the time, so any dates given are subject to change. All dates were correct at time of writing. Certificate information is also not available at time of writing.

So let's switch the phone to silent, dim the lights and get ready to watch some fantastic movies. Here are the most family movies that will have you counting the days to their release in 2023 to watch in the cinemas.

The films we have to look forward to include the return of Puss In Boots, a live action re-make of Disney’s classic the Little Mermaid, as well as prequels to Charlie & the Chocolate Factory and The Hunger Games. There are also TMNT, PAW Patrol and Indiana Jones sequels in the pipeline and at the age of 64 the ever-youthful Barbie is finally set to become a live action movie star.

All The Best New Family Movies For 2023

  1. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

  2. The first movie on our list is a sequel to the Shrek spin-off movie Puss in Boots. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will be released on 2nd February 2023 and comes a mere 12 years after the release of the original film.

    When Puss in Boots learns that he has used eight of his nine lives, he sets out on a journey to find the mystical Last Wish so that he can restore the lives he has lost. With Kitty Softpaws and his new companion Perro he sets out on his journey.

    Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek return as the voices of Puss and Softpaws, while Olivia Coleman, Harvey Guillen and Florence Pugh also star.

  3. Harold and the Purple Crayon
  4. Another book adaption released in time for February Half Term,    Harold and the Purple Crayon is out on 30th June 2023. This live action movie is based on the book of the same name written by Crockett Johnson.

    The sweet-hearted film tells the story of Harold, who uses his magic purple crayon to retreat into his own fantasy world. Soon he realizes that he's been selfish with his crayon, so he then uses it to help his parents and friends, and he even goes on a mission to Mars.

    The film will star Zachary Levi, Zooey Deschanel, Lil Rel Howery and Ravi Patel.

  5. The Super Mario Bros. Movie

  6. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an upcoming computer-animated fantasy adventure comedy film based on Nintendo's Mario video game franchise. Scheduled for release in the UK in time for the Easter holidays on March 31, there is not much info available about the plot, but Mario fans are pretty excited by the sneak peeks given in the trailer.

    It features Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario, and also includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco, Charles Martinet, and Kevin Michael Richardson.

  7. The Little Mermaid

  8. Disney continues its project to make live-action remakes of it’s biggest animated movies, and so spring 2023 sees the planned release of The Little Mermaid. All the biggest hit songs from the original movie will be there along with new one written by Allan Menken and songwriter-of-the-moment Lin Manuel Miranda.

    The film stars Halle Bailey as Ariel along with Jonah Hauer-King, Art Malik, Noma Dumezweni, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy, with Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay, and Awkwafina in voice roles.

  9. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

  10. Hold onto your whips as a 5th Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, should hit cinemas on 5th June 2023.

    The film stars Harrison Ford. No plot announcements yet but rumours are that the movie sees Indy battling Nazi scientists once more, against the backdrop of the 1960s Space Race.

    Alongside Ford are lots of new cast members including Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Toby Jones, and Antonio Banderas.

  11. Barbie
  12. At the grand old age of 64, Barbie finally hits the big screen on 23rd July 2023 in her first live-action movie. Directed by Greta Gerwig, with music by Alexandre Desplat this is billed as a romantic comedy with Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken.

    Expect the stores to be awash with pink clothing next summer and Barbie to be Toy of the Year.

    Other stars include Will Ferrell, upcoming Dr. Who Ncuti Gatwa and America Ferrera.

  13. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
  14. Another movie due for release in the summer holidays is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, an 2D style animated TMNT movie. For the first time in the franchise, the four Turtles will be voiced by actual teenagers, on honing in on the authenticity of the Teenage element.

    No plot or casting details but expect it to be absolutely Cowabunga.

  15. PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie
  16. Hot on the tail of the first PAW Patrol movie comes PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie with a planned release date of October 13, 2023 just in time for October Half Term.

    A magical meteor crash lands in Adventure City, and gives the PAW Patrol pups superpowers, transforming them into The Mighty Pups.

    Stars include Stars Kim Kardashian, Taraji P. Henson and Dax Shepard.

  17. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

  18. This Hunger Games prequel, scheduled for release in November 2023 is based on the successful prequel novel written by Suzanne Collins. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set 64 years before the first instalment, and follows young Coriolanus "Coryo" Snow, who is far from the callous president seen in the original trilogy.

    The film stars Tom Blyth, Rachel Zegler, Hunter Schafer, Jason Schwartzman, Burn Gorman, Peter Dinklage, and Viola Davis.

  19. Wish
  20. Disney’s big animated movie for Christmas 2023 is Wish. From the team that wrote Frozen comes the story which will tell how the wishing star that so many Disney characters have wished upon came to be.

    Asha, a 17-year-old who sees a darkness in her kingdom that no one else does, so in a moment of desperation, she makes an impassioned plea to the stars. The answer to Asha’s wish is an actual star that falls from the sky to help on her journey.

    Starring Ariana DeBose, the cast also includes Alan Tudyk.

  21. Wonka
  22. Another prequel, this time telling the back story of Willy Wonka, he of the chocolate factory, following his early days as an eccentric chocolatier. Wonka is due to be in cinemas in December 2023 in time for a perfect Christmassy chocolate-fest.

    Starring the ubiquitous Timothée Chalamet as the title character, the cast also includes British greats Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Keegan-Michael Key, Jim Carter and Olivia Colman.

    There is also rumoured to be a sequel to Ghostbusters afterlife in early development and pencilled in for release in late 2023, probably in time for Christmas as well.
